[bg=290101][cs=7] [kit] Dustfeather the sad [words] 516 [notes] ...i feel so responsible...
They had buried Nightstar. Orangesky was to become the new leader. Dustfeather sat away from the group of cats being nursed by Leafsong, her head hung low, ears back, still, almost unnoticeable, had it not been for the occasional twitch of her ear to flick snow from her head.
She felt her lungs take in deep, chilling breaths. She felt responsible for Nightstar's death. She had not been quick enough to attack the cat who killed her. It pained her to say it, but she felt so so responsible that she wanted to end it now. Her green eyes opened, and scanned the white moor. She could see small patches of pink where they had returned, and dribbled blood, some of which was her own. She refused to be tended to; other cats needed Leafsong's help.
She heard the crunch of pawsteps behind her, but didn't move. She kept her head low, and closed her emeralds again. She was so sad, and upset that a great leader, the she-cat who had taken her in after her sister, and her clan had wronged her. Her heart took fevered beats, panicked and sore. It shivered in her rib cage. She knew who the cat was. There was no mistaking his smell. She finally moved, twitching her muscly shoulders. She turned to him.
"Orangesky... I feel... almost responsible for Nightstar's death. Had I not hesitated to attack that harlot, Nightstar might still be here... God damn... I hate to say it, but Shadestar was right... I was never ready to become a warrior... Hell, having a leader as a father doesn't exactly help. Everyone expects you to be a strong little warrioress... And I'm not! I'm a pathetic whingebag! A whining little kittypet!" She seethed, sighing. "I'm stupid, a fool... I'm all mouth, no action..." She sighed, swishing her tail.
The dusty she-cat stood, and padded a little further off. "The rabbits will never come out in this weather... We need to send any available warriors out hunting, or we'll all either starve or die of our wounds." The young she-cat mused for a moment, scenting the air. FireClan scent still lingered, sending shivers down her spine. "I do not trust those FireClan bastards, so I would assume it best to send cats out in teams of three, as protection from ambush. Not that Shadestar'd risk it. He's stupid, but not that stupid."
Dustfeather sighed, and flicked her ear again, licking some sticky blood from her chest. Her heart shivered again within it's cage. She closed her eyes. "Something in my chest keeps vibrating..." She mumbled to Orangesky, walking over to him. She licked his shoulder as a sign of respect, and turned away once more. "FireClan... Fire shall tear through the land... My father told me anyway... If Redeyes isn't elimanated soon, I fear we might all join StarClan before next Greenleaf, Orangesky." Dustfeather mewed, anxiety in her eyes.

Orangesky's eyes wandered for a moment, thinking of what to say. "You're a good warrior now, Dustfeather. I made sure that you were worthy before Nightstar made you a warrior. Remember how I interrupted your warrior ceremony? I didn't think you were ready. I didn't interrupt the next one because I felt you were ready," Orangesky meowed rather calmly, trying to meet Dustfeather's eyes, but not quite being able to do it.
"FireClan won't last, I'm sure. Shadestar's the type who likes to be in control and make sure that everything goes according to his plans. And I don't think that he's too happy with FireClan after what happened at ThunderClan's battle." Orangesky said, still nervous. He was afraid of becoming leader. He never thought of himself the cat, he never thought that he could deserve living nine times over. Compared to most of the leaders, he just seemed to flawed, with too many oscillating opinions.. Milkystar and Shadestar stood up for themselves no matter what, and Twinestar was fair-minded.. Orangesky shared none of those traits.
"Nightstar's death is nobody's fault. There are so many things that could have been done, but they never did happen, so it's not fair to dwell on that. We fought our hardest, and we got Mothkit back. Think of it like that. And soon Cloudrunner will be coming home, and we'll all be in one piece.."

Dustfeather listened to him, and nodded. "I... Yeah. But sometimes, Orangesky, I feel torn between WindClan, my home, and my family in ShadowClan... Even if I do hate Flameshade and her ways, how she doesn't hold her tongue, her brashness... Ravenfeather's softness, caring... Crowstorm's uncanny ability to make others smile... My mom, and her crazy conversations that'd go on well into the night... But most of all, I miss Drydusk... I know he unfortuantely shares blood with Shadestar, but... Ever since I was small, I idolized him, loved him even...
"I asked my father to let him stand in as deputy that one time... But, he chose Shadestar to be his new deputy. I don't know who swayed his desicion, but I should have told him how Drydusk had been at that gathering... Maybe, if I had, he'd be Drystar right now and we might not be in this mess. He'd have better control over those flea bitten rats." Dustfeather sighed again.
"Just out of curiousity, Orangesky, who are you considering for deputy?" The she-cat asked, tilting her orange head.

"I really have no idea at this point," he said, in response to pretty much everything she said. "I still have my trip to the moonpool, and then I have dusk to elect my deputy."
His answers were short, because he was confused about everything. Being leader had just pretty much been dropped on his head, and he didn't know if he was up to it.
"I'll take a few warriors along with me on the journey who I think could possibly be deputy. Maybe I'll even take Winterwind again, and change his mindset a little bit. I don't even know what the first part of his name is, though, so that might be confusing, to see Winterstar." he debated verbally for a few moments, and then thought the rest to himself mentally.
After a short pause, he added in: "Shadestar's already forbidden you from joining ShadowClan, as he said at the fight. So you can't really go back. You trained as a WindClan cat, and now Shadestar doesn't want you. And with a sharp tongue to match his, I don't blame him. You belong here," Orangesky meowed, at his normal low, quiet voice.
