She looked down at one of her paws, and dug the claws of her other paw into it. She stifled a hiss and peered with tears in her round blue eyes though the entrance to the den. "Don't go! What shall happen to you? You might be lost forever!" Yowled the voice of a cat. "I DON'T CARE! I know she is STILL THERE!" hissed Solarkit. "Mommy would NEVER, EVER leave me!" And with that, she bounded from the camp and set off over the moor, the way her mother had taken the moon before on the same day. She was followed by the other cat's wails of warning, but she paid no heed. The snow seemed to close behind her. Solarpaw turned over onto her back and looked at the sky through the cracks in the branch. She let a single empty tear escape from her eyes, which were squeezed tightly shut. Mummy? Where are you?" cried Solarkit. tears flowed from her eyes. "I'm lost! I don't want to join Starclan without you!" She smelled an unfamiliar scent. She held her breath as it drew closer and closer... Solarpaw let out the supressed hiss as an agonised yowl which she tried to stop again in vain. Rain began to fall around the braches. One got through a large crack and went into her eye. You wouldn't have been able to tell it from the rest of the salty tears. "A kit?" a large, battle-scarred tom mewed in suprise. "Stinks of Windclan! But, she is so far away... in a snowstorm too... what strength for one so little! Hardly the runt due to size!" Solarkit hissed. "We could do with kits like her," mewed the other cat, a large tabby she-cat. "But she's from WINDCLAN!" protested the first cat. "So?" replied the first, smoothly. "They probably gave her up for dead. We can say she was abandoned and roll her in fox dung or somethin'." she turned to Solarkit. "Hey kittums. Want to join Shadowclan? WE can give you food, shelter and train you well." "No!" cried poor, cold Solarkit. "I want to see mommy! She vanished in the snow last moon! I KNOW she's still alive!" There was a hurried discussion. Then they turned back to her. "If you come with us, we can train you to be so strong you could rip through a snowstorm like this and find your 'mommy'." said the tabby. The other cat nodded. Solarkit pushed slowly towards them through the snow... "Why did I come here?" murmered Solarkit. "I could've joined my mum in Starclan if I refused! This life of hell... it SICKENS me!" her voice rose to a wail. "What friends do I have here? I should have had the sense to know that she was already dead and gone!"

Were they having a quarrel? Crowstar was about to settle down to sleep when he heard a wail. Was someone in pain? No, Crowstar knew who it was; the young Solarpaw. Crowstar got out from his den, and walked over to the apprentice den. Most of the other apprentices were trying to sleep, telling Solarpaw to shut her yap. Crowstar's eyes softened as he saw the kit. She had lost her mother at a young age, as he had. But she had been taken by two warriors, and when he had smelled her, he thought he had scented the faintest bit of Windclan. "Solarpaw?" Crowstar asked, ratther worried for the apprentice. "Is everything all right? Do you need to speak to someone, have a little private time?" He asked. Crowstar knew how to deal with cats her age, he had Firepaw to thank for it. Raging teen hormones weren't good for a growing apprentice.

The other cats in the den exited quietly for her to talk with the leader. "I am really sad! I'm really loyal to Shadowclan, because it is a part of my life, but did I do the right thing? Did I really follow the right path? I feel like I'm about to explode!" She sobbed into his fur. "My mother is dead! A-and I remembered... everything..."

Firepaw looked up at his father as he exited the den with Mosspaw, with his pleading blue eyes. Solarpaw was very sad. As Solarpaw sobbed into Crowstar's black fur, he licked her forehead gently. "It's okay Solarpaw," The old leader said, looking down at the sobbing apprentice. "I grew up without my parents too, it's a hard life, I know. But I know something else, you're not a Shadowclanner, you're Windclan." Crowstar looked down at the bright little she-cat. He let out a little sigh, closing his blue eyes. The she-cat was so sad. Should he let her go back to her clan? He nodded slowly to himself; it was the right thing to do. He had no right in keeping the she-cat here. "Solarpaw, if you do not believe you belong here in Shadowclan, I will personally take you to Windclan to see if you will be welcomed back to their clan. See it as my parting gift to you." Crowstar smiled at the apprentice. She was his son's age, and reminded him so so much of Dustpaw. It was hard looking at her.

If I leave now, what will be the entire point of the journey here? I don't think my destiny lies in retracing my steps... I would just cause my birthclan to hate me more than they did before I left. At Shadowclan, I can become strong. I think my loyalties lie here. Solarpaw drew back from Crowstar. She was very glad of his company, and she thought she had finally landed on the right decision. "I don't think I can leave... If I went back now, it would be as if I came all the way out here for no reason. I know my mother wouldn't have wanted that. Besides, what about the other apprentices? I don't want to upset them! And also, I have a great leader." She managed a small, watery grin and a tiny purr.

Crowstar knew Firepaw would try and make friends with Solarpaw now, seeing as hw upset she was. "If you ever need to talk to me Solarpaw, I'll always be here for you." Crowstar grinned gently, licking Solarpaw's forehead again.

Solarpaw worked out the comment. It doesn't matter where I am, I have already found my mother, haven't I? She's a piece of me, like I'm a piece of her!" The she-cat began to purr loudly, her tail no longer fluffed up with pain but swishing around contentedly near her small white paws. The torrent of rain had begun to let up. She threw Firestar a warm glance, and then turned back to Crowstar. "Thanks, Crowstar! I'll remember that my mother is always with me!" She mewed, gratefully. She walked over to follow Firepaw. "Oh, and Crowstar," she remembered suddenly. "Are there any warriors who don't have apprentices yet? I haven't got a mentor right now." She began to walk to the den entrance. 'Thank you for showing me where my destiny lies,' She thought to herself, pausing to smile one more time at her leader, before bounding out to join the others, standing and waiting on the rainwashed ground. She let the sun wash onto her damp fur and it reflected off her light coloured fur, making her look suddenly lots more cheerful. She felt it too.
