[Fumbling his confidence And wondering why the world has passed him by Hoping that he's bid for more than arguments And failed attempts to fly,]
Most cats, called 'kitty-pets', were weak and feeble little beings. The clans said they were soft, and were raised with so much luxury. They said that they were worthless little excuses for cats. Kitty-pet was even an insult amongst the clans. Kitty-pets were attacked and picked on more often than ignored, sent away peacefully, or just a talk. Somewhere in them, a good percentage of the clan cats thought all of this. Why else would Firestar be a fairy tale? Even though Firestar roamed StarClan, nobody thought of his tales as anything but fictitious. Now, I am not about to start yelling at the clans for thinking this of these cats. After all, it was what they were raised on. And even so, nine times out of ten, they are correct in saying the above, sadly.
[Fly.]
But, did you know, that even though some cats have it that way, others don't? Not every cat owned by twoleg's get the life that's laughed at by the wild cats.
What if a cat didn't like being a kitty-pet? What if he didn't have the average life? Such a thing is atrocious to most cats. Kitty-pet's only come out to play for games, and only join the clans to fool around, and then later leave when they get bored or leaf-bare rolls around.
That thought, one cat in the twolegplace who follows that, is Abyssus.
[We were meant to live for so much more, Have we lost ourselves? Somewhere we live inside, Somewhere we live inside. We were meant to live for so much more, Have we lost ourselves? Somewhere we live inside.]
Abyssus's eyes opened. He was lying on his soft cat bed on the cat-tower, green eyes with a hint of blue now opened up a crack. He was only four months old, give him a break. Clan kits would have still been lying around if they were him. His rusty red fur was like a pile of limp, discarded bike chains-- so lonely, worn, and unwanted, along with sharing his color.
But, Abyssus was a kitty-pet, he had owners who loved him, and he was living a life of luxury, wasn't he? That's not right. Sure, he had food available to him twice a day, but he didn't get the food easy. And you would know, if you listened to his surroundings, that he wasn't the only cat in the place.
Four more kittens crowded around Abyssus, mewling and whining to their mother, asking her when they would have dinner. Abyssus glanced out the window, and noticed it was late noon. It was only a matter of time..
The rusty cat sighed, and rose to four paws, jumping off of the giant white cat-tower. He was only about half-way full grown, and he already had no hope. Only a kit, and reality had already hit him.
[Dreaming about Providence, And whether mice or men have second tries. Maybe we've been living with our eyes half open, Maybe we're bent and broken,]
Why? He should be playing and enjoying himself while he was a playful kit. First off, Abyssus grew up at a breeders. He still lived there. At a breeders, and Abyssinians, there was no room for flaws and error in the cats. These cats were top-notch, best quality, show Abyssinians. Abyssus would never be a show Abyssinian, and he was never any of the other factors that were looked for. As his paws hit the ground, for a quick moment, you may have been able to see something, if you could spot defects and could count fast.
Left front paw. One, two, three, four, one dewclaw. Right front paw. One, two, three, four, five, one dewclaw.
[Broken.]
"Dinner will come soon enough, my lovelies." His mother said with a light voice, to her little kits. Abyssus looked at them from a few yards away. They all had a future. They would all be loved. Taken by no-claws.
Abyssus had no idea yet that there was more to life than just twoleg homes. He had no idea that the stuff out the time-teller was anything more than fiction. Abyssus had never been outside. He had never felt grass, sprang on a mouse, jumped for a bird, or even swatted a butterfly. Not even his mother had ever been on grass.
Abyssus trotted behind his siblings, quiet and silent. He was always a little saddened, and he seemed to be very forlorn. Wouldn't you be that way if you knew your family was destined for greatness, and you weren't? In Abyssus's eyes, that was all life was.
Abyssus glanced out of a time-teller again. There wasn't going to be much do do. Abyssus decided to make like a kitty-pet and take a fast nap. Something told him to do so, whether his drowsiness, boredom, or just because he had nothing to be happy and live for.
[We were meant to live for so much more Have we lost ourselves? ]
Abyssus dreamed of a vast land. The land was huge, and endless. Abyssus recognized it as within the time-teller. The sky was after-breakfast, and he was cheerful and content for some reason. As Abyssus trotted around in the zones he knew, he managed to pounce at a bird. The bird stayed in a tree, and Abyssus's paw smacked it. Abyssus grinned as the bird tweeted at him, and the two began to play in the grass. The bird flew about while Abyssus chased after it, and batted it with his paw. Suddenly, the bird flew across the black ground, and sat on a wire. Abyssus looked at it longingly, his dream-self wishing he was able to walk with that free bird. But he was trapped within these bounds. Abyssus wanted to get free, but he woke up before he could make a single move.
Abyssus shivered when he finally woke. Hours had passed, and his mother was yowling her kits over, in the same voice she did every time.. Abyssus sighed, and made his way to the bowl, stepping on the soft white carpet. Abyssus found his siblings crowded around the food bowl. There was no open space for him. Abyssus mewed pitifully and sadly, waiting for his turn. A young no-claw bent down, trying to get to the kitten's level. She spoke some nonsense, and her large, scooping paw grabbed Abyssus. Her other paw moved the other kittens out of the way. She put Abyssus in the small open spot.
Squished, but now able to eat, Abyssus bent his head down, and began to eat the food. It was the good-tasting soft food, not the horrible hard stuff that every kit hated. This was easy on their young teeth, and it tasted very good. Three minutes later, feeding time was finished. Abyssus got the short end of the stick this time, but he stuck around to lick the bowl clean, instead of sleeping like the rest of the kits. The Abyssinian cat always got this benefit.
While Abyssus was licking the bowl clean, a large no-claw cane over, bent over, and picked up the bowl he was licking. Disappointed that he didn't get to finish the entire thing this time, Abyssus padded off to sleep again.
[Somewhere we live inside Somewhere we live inside ]
When Abyssus looked out the time-teller again, the sun was shining, and his mother was yowling again, summoning all of her kits. Her voice rang out:
“Abyssus! You'll miss the trip outside!” His mother called, making Abyssus jump off of his white pillow that was covered with his orange fur. Abyssus was excited to go outside. He hadn't experienced something that might be fun like this in a while.
As he walked around to the door, he was blasted by cold wind. The time teller had told it was early morning.
Abyssus, as soon as he fumbled down the stone steps, realized where he was-- he was inside the time teller! Excited, he looked up into a tree, and saw a bird there. It flapped its wings and flew towards some trees, out of Abyssus's reach.
Different smells filled his nose, as he went to see what they were. One scent, he recognized, was a tiny swift animal his mother called a squirrel. Then, robin for an animal that flew and had a bright chest. He then was told about the bright colored cardinal. Abyssus was astounded by all of the life out here.
”Mommy, what's in the trees?” a kit asked, turning to where the trees are.
“Many animals live there. Big ones. Cats, dogs, mice, squirrels, rats, birds, birds that eat cats.. I have gone out there once. It is quite frightening. Luckily, you'll never have to go out there if you have no-claws.” Abyssus's mother said, gently. All of the animals out there only gnawed at Abyssus's imagination.
[We were meant to live for so much more Have we lost ourselves? Somewhere we live inside ]
There was a loud call from the no-claws, and their mother turned towards the door. She twitched her tail, telling her kits to follow her. Every kit happily went inside. Abyssus was at the end of the line. Once he managed to get off the green grass, and onto the stone steps, he stopped, and sat, looking at the forest, wondering what it was really like out there. He stood up and began to walk down the steps.
“Abyssus! Where are you going! This way!” his mother called. Abyssus sighed, and turned around, padding back inside.
”So ya hunt like this?” one of Abyssus's sisters asked, getting down low. Her rump stuck high in the air, fiery tail as straight as a branch.
“Exactly! Great job,” she purred, nuzzling her daughter.
”I'm gonna hunt for my no-claws! Roar!” She said loudly, pouncing on Abyssus's tail. Abyssus yowled loudly, and turned around to spit some words at his sister.
”Stop it, you annoying little thing! It's no wonder nobody likes you!” After he said this, all commotion that may have been happening stopped. Abyssus quickly realized his mistake, but it was too late.
”At least Sunny is fun to be with Abyssus, unlike you!” one of his brothers hissed.
”Yeah! What are you talking about! No-one likes YOU!”
”Go away, mitt paw!”
”Dreamer!”
”Queen!” his sister made quite a face at this insult.
”Yeah, nobody likes freaks like you! Why can't you just be normal, like the rest of us?”
“Silence! Everybody, be quiet. I'm sending you all to bed early. And, at dinner, I'm going to hold all of you back! That was wrong of Abyssus, but now you are all at fault for being wrong to him! I could have taken care of your brother without your remarks! Now, all of you, shoo!” She hissed, dispersing the kits.
Abyssus ran, and sat over on the piece of wood next to the time-teller: What his mother had taught him was called a windowsill. He looked outside at where he just was, and sighed, closing his eyes. He wanted to leave. He had no future here. All of the insults echoed in his mind, and as he sat hunched next to the window, he thought about his life, and where he would be months from now.
[We want more than this world's got to offer We want more than this world's got to offer]
Nowhere.
Nowhere was the conclusion Abyssus had come to. His siblings had already teased him about it, and his mother had already told him about it. A no-claw would never take him. He would never have a chance of having his own kits with the defects he carried.
Abyssus was sick of it all. Now. Now was the time to leave.
He went by every window, looking out of it. All of them were sealed closed on the ground floor. He even triple checked the entire floor, and there was nothing there. As he began to give up, and planned to run away on the next outing, he remembered the stairs.
Abyssus recalled the stairs. He had fallen down them before, and he had never had the courage to go back up the wooden surface. It was painful, and he had to go to the healer's. But, what pain would come to him in the future if he never left? It was worth a try, wasn't it?
Summoning all of his courage, Abyssus began his way up the stairs. He leaped to get onto the first step. Then the second, third, fourth, all the way up to the twelfth step. He was finally at the top. Abyssus began to look around upstairs. As he went into the room with a huge bed where two no-claws slept, he noticed they weren't in there. They were probably downstairs, or outside. As Abyssus heard a no-claw machine start up, he knew that at least one of them was out. He looked at the two windows. Both closed.
[We want more than the wars of our fathers And everything inside screams for second life]
He then made his way into the young no-claw's room. It was bright in there, and there were many no-fur toys all over the place, decorating the room. There! An open window! Abyssus stood on the edge of it, preparing to jump onto a tree a few yards away from the window. As he tensed, he felt the paws of the young no-fur scoop around him.
The no-fur yelled at him, faces close together. Abyssus cringed at his stupidity. How did he not realize her? She had to have been in the room at the time! Or, maybe his fire red coat drew her attention while she was walking by.
The young no-claw ran down the stairs, and dropped Abyssus off at the base of the stairs. He was tired from going up the stairs, so he just decided to wander until another escape opportunity opened. He lay down next to the door. Maybe, if he stood awake for long enough, it would open.
[We were meant to live for so much more Have we lost ourselves?]
Suddenly, the sound of a no-claw opening up a door filled the house. As soon as the male no-claw stepped in, Abyssus darted out, tasting freedom. Yes! Finally!
Nothing interrupted his joy. He kept running, and running, until he was at a road. A few no-claw machines zoomed past the road. As soon he felt a break in the rush, he ran across the road, and into the forest. Freedom!
[We were meant to live for so much more Have we lost ourselves?]
The forest only went on for a short while, however. Nothing but the occasional bird was found in there. This haunted Abyssus, as reality struck. But, what would he do? He was lost! Panic filled him, as he ran in the first direction that instinct told him to.
He dashed out of the strip of forest, and ended up standing before many dead trees. One hill stood tall. Maybe Abyssus could find home from there! He made his way towards it, weaving between the dead trees. Once he managed to take in the entire view, he gasped. A huge place of gray trees was before him. One part of it was lit well, however, one part on the southern edge, wasn't. This triggered Abyssus's curiosity.
Abyssus ran down the hill, as fast as he could, trying to reach the gray forest. His heart pounded. He would just hunt the way mother said was right, and he'd be able to live! Maybe, just maybe, that extra claw would be good for something.
