the Cat// Badgerpaw
the Noted// Open for anybody who wants to do some training!
the Number// 696Badgerpaw had skipped out of camp, merrily prancing at the thought of his first day of training. Come one, Badgerpaw. We can go do some training, Daddy had said. He was brimming with anticipation, and he couldn't wait to start. He really wanted to try hunting and fighting, it sounded like so much fun.
"Daddy, where are we going?" he asked, hopping around. He was joyful, and the sun and haunting chirping of the crickets seemed to reflect his mood. He almost couldn't believe that it was happening, that he was an apprentice going out for his first day. and he didn't even have to sneak past anybody!
He sighed, remembering how much trouble he had gotten in for sneaking out and almost drowning his sister. It had been fun, like a game, until then. When they got back, he wasn't even allowed to leave the nursery for what felt like forever. Mommy said it was for the best, but Badgerpaw thought it was just plain annoying and boring. Sunkit and Emberkit didn't have to stay inside...
"We'll be going to the river," he chuckled, looking down at his son. This is going to be so much FUN! Badgerpaw thought. Thoughts rushed his mind, and, after a while, they actually got there. He recognized the place from when Twinestar had first taken him after being apprenticed, when he was being shown the borders and stuff. They were finally there, and finally ready to start.
Badgerpaw recognized a few scents, he had carefully studied and sorted through them when he had tried to get to the island. He didn't know what they were, but he knew them. Okay, before we start, do you know any of these scen-" he started, but was cut off.
"Yeah, I do!" Badgerpaw whispered, careful not to make to much noise as he got down into a hunter's crouch. It wasn't to good, but he knew what to do in a sense, from playing in the nursery and from Mommy telling him how to do it. It was a good thing he had been absorbing the scents as he walked though the forest, it wasn't too long before he found the scent he was looking for.
He carefully moved forward, intent on finding it, until his eyes locked onto the target. A squirrel. The whole time, his father looked at him curiously, almost believing that his son knew how to do this. Okay, not to far now, he thought, remembering what his mom had told him. Wait until you're only a couple of tail-lengths away.
Every movement took forever, but Badgerpaw couldn't really tell. He was so intent that he didn't need to worry about his patience. He paused, then continued forward, careful not to let his paws make too much noise. The squirrels head popped up as he crunched a leaf, and he stood frozen for several moments, until it went back to browsing for nuts.
"So close," he whispered to himself, so quietly it was like he mouthed it. Then, he was only a few paw step away, and he... sprang!
His prey was unsuspecting, and he landed on top of the squirrel in a thud. It squeaked, and Badgerpaw unsheathed his claws, clawing the squirrel. All the time, Twinestar stood by, curious and proud. He tried to suffocate the flailing thing, and it took a while, but Badgerpaw held it in his mouth the whole time.
"Badgerpaw! Great job!" Twinestar exclaimed. He couldn't believe that his son had just caught it. Pride and joy welled inside him, and he playfully pounced on his son. Rolling him over, he cuffed at his ear, claws sheathed, and laughed.
"Daddy, I caught my first prey!"
