The Number// 462
Skysong stood there, watching the fish swim around at the river's mouth. Tears welled in her eyes, and she could barely see. She blinked the tears away; they were a sign of weakness, and she knew only too well that weakness was no longer an option for her. She thrust her paw out, hooking a large fish and pulling it up to land.
I have to prove my worth. And help my clan. Leaf-bare will be here sooner than we know, she thought, and I must make sure that we are all well fed. She was intent on helping her clan, and she had set out hunting to do just that. She walked along the river's edge, looking for more fish. Again, she lashed out her paw and hooked another scaly creature.
She only wanted to be loved, yet she knew that it would never happed. No one loved her, no one ever would. Why? she asked herself. Why can't I be pretty or selfless, or have some quality that makes me feel beautiful? What have I done wrong? Is it because my parents are monsters? I no longer hold hate in my heart, only love. Why?
She was upset, but turned back to the water as she felt tears threaten to fill her eyes once more. Determined she watched the water without moving, and suddenly splashed the water and pulled her third floppy fish onto the shore.
She prayed to Starclan, thanking the fish for their life. She padded along the shore once more, looking for any other fish that might be around. She spotted one, a little far out into the lake, too far for her to catch. Unless..
She backed up, ran, and made a giant leap. She could clearly see where the fish was, and took aim before the water splashed in her eyes and blinded her. Her claws barely missed it, but they did. She swam out to the mouth, and stood there shaking. She waited for several moment, what seemed like hours to her, before another fish came. She swiped at it, catching it and scrambling out of the river.
She prayed to Starclan for the final fish, and picked all of them up. He mouth watered at the scent, but she knew she mustn't eat them. She needed to save them for Destinycall, and the other hungry cats.
She finally arrived, and put her four fish down. No one acknowledged her, and she picked out a fish for Destinycall. She wanted to show that there were no hard feelings, and maybe even become friends. Most of all, she wanted to be a mentor, maybe for one of Destinycall's kits.
